Features Week October 2018: Jenn Harkless

Jenn has been a follower/friend of mine since I started out on Twitter. It’s been amazing to see her progress as a writer and I can’t wait to see where she goes!

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing since I was a kid. I love coming up with new stories. Sometimes they were for school and then I would write stories to entertain my friends and little sister. If I wasn’t writing stories, I was creating screenplays and trying to recruit them to be actors and actresses.

What inspired you to become a writer?

Life can become mundane and it’s fun to escape from reality sometimes. I enjoy creating new worlds and characters and letting the story drive me(and surprise me) at times.

Are you published anywhere?

Which of your written pieces is your favorite?

My favorite so far would have to be The Left Trail.

In what genre do you write?

I like to write in every genre. My short stories are usually in the horror/thriller genre. I’m currently working on bigger projects that are more thriller/suspense with a bit of romance. I also have another fantasy project I temporarily set aside, but intend to return to. I may post it on my site as a 3 Part story. Paranormal, mythical creatures, and your basic human all have a place in my imagination.

What is the most challenging part about being a writer in the genre you’ve chosen?

Sometimes the material just feels too generic. I want to put a twist on the theme I choose.

What writer(s) do you look up to?

Stephen King, Anne Rice, Sherry Thomas, Lynsay Sands, Robert Jordan. All great authors with different styles that speak to me.

Do you have any funny stories about your writing adventures?

I tried to pull a 12 hour writing session when I finally had the entire night alone. The next day I read over what I had written and it didn’t make sense. There were words that didn’t even belong in the sentence or the story for that matter. I wish I could blame it on inebriation. Take breaks while writing!

Do you have any encouraging words for those that want to write?

Just write. My overthinking hinders my writing. When I just write and worry about editing after, great things happen.

Is there anyone you’d like to promote?

Elliott Downing, who is author of Some Distant Sunrise. His posts full of wit and intelligence were enough to peak my interest in this author. Check him out.

Where can we find you on social media?

You can find me on Twitter @JennChristians4. This is where I post updates about new short stories and anything regarding my writing.

Thanks so much to Jenn for answering my questions and being awesome! Be sure to check out her work and send some feedback if you like it!
